Who Is the Holy Spirit? Discovering the Person Behind the Power
You cannot develop deep fellowship with someone you do not know.Scripture Foundations
John 14:16-17 (KJV)
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Thematic study passages: John 14:15-27; John 16:7-15
Daily Bible Tour: DAY 92 OF 365 2 Samuel 7–9
The Bible Tour follows three consecutive chapters each day. These readings are separate from the approved Holy Spirit thematic passages above.
Devotional Teaching
The Christian life was never designed to be lived by human strength alone. Before His crucifixion, Jesus prepared His troubled disciples for His departure. He did not promise merely a better method, a stronger personality, or an occasional spiritual feeling. He promised another Comforter who would abide with them. The Holy Spirit is God's personal gift of abiding help, not an emergency resource reserved for unusually difficult days.
The Holy Spirit is a Person, not an impersonal force. Jesus says that He teaches and brings Christ's words to remembrance (John 14:26). He guides into truth and glorifies Jesus (John 16:13-14). Elsewhere He speaks, directs the Church, and can be grieved. These are personal actions. We therefore do not learn techniques for controlling Him; we learn to trust, honour, and obey Him. His power is never detached from His wisdom, holiness, and love.
He is also fully God, eternally one with the Father and the Son. Calling Him the third Person of the Trinity does not make Him third in importance or less divine. The Father sends, the Son saves and is glorified, and the Spirit makes God's life and presence real within His people. The names Holy Ghost and Holy Spirit refer to the same divine Person; the different English wording does not describe different beings.
Notice the intimacy of Jesus' promise: the Spirit would be in His disciples. God's presence would not be confined to a particular room, mountain, or meeting. For the believer, fellowship with God continues in the kitchen, at the workplace, during study, and in the quiet struggle that nobody else sees. A worship service can deepen our awareness of His presence, but the end of a service does not end His care.
As November begins, pursue the Person behind the power. Ask not only what the Holy Spirit can do through you, but what He desires to form within you. A willingness to forgive, a clearer understanding of Christ, courage to witness, and compassion for the hurting are meaningful expressions of His work. Miracles should turn our attention to Jesus, not make us collectors of spiritual experiences. Begin this month with a simple welcome: Holy Spirit, teach me to know You through Scripture, to honour Jesus, and to respond to Your leading. Let every desire for power become a deeper surrender to God.
Deeper Insight
We do not receive the Holy Spirit so that we can control divine power; we yield to Him so that our lives increasingly reveal Jesus.
Scripture-Led Prayers and Declarations
1. Know the Helper
John 14:26 (KJV)
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Prayer: Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Open my understanding to His ministry. Deliver me from ignorance and self-dependence. As I read Your Word, teach me what Jesus has said and give me grace to obey it today.
Declaration: The Holy Spirit is my divine Helper. I am learning Christ's truth and responding with obedience.
2. Grow in fellowship
2 Corinthians 13:14 (KJV)
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all. Amen.
Prayer: Lord, draw me beyond occasional religious activity into daily fellowship with You. Let the grace of Jesus, the love of the Father, and communion with the Holy Spirit shape my thoughts, choices, conversations, and relationships throughout this month.
Declaration: I am welcomed by God's grace and love. I will cultivate fellowship with Him each day.
3. Receive power to witness
Acts 1:8 (KJV)
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Prayer: Father, empower every KDC member to represent Jesus faithfully. Prepare our families, ministers, and the Regina City Mass Choir for fruitful service. Let Banquet with the King draw people to Christ through truth, love, and the work of Your Spirit.
Declaration: The Holy Spirit empowers me to witness for Jesus. My life and service will point people to Him.
Daily Declaration
I belong to Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit dwells in me, teaches me, strengthens me, and empowers me to serve. I will grow in understanding, intimacy, holiness, wisdom, and boldness. I receive grace to honour His presence in ordinary moments and to obey His Word. This November, let God's power be revealed in me, through me, and among us, for the glory of Jesus. Amen.
Practical Action
Spend fifteen unhurried minutes with John 14:16-27. Thank God for three things the Holy Spirit does, and surrender one area in which you have relied only on yourself.
Journal Prompt
Have I approached the Holy Spirit mainly as a source of experiences, or as the divine Person who leads my whole life?
OUR UNITED DECLARATION FOR NOVEMBER
We are a people loved by the Father, redeemed by Jesus Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit.
This November, we yield ourselves afresh to God. We receive grace to know His Word, obey His voice and walk in His wisdom.
We trust Him for mercy, favour, direction and provision. We bring our families, marriages, health, careers and businesses under His care. We will work diligently, love faithfully and follow His leading.
We ask for fresh fire, fresh dew and fresh empowerment. May our faith deepen, our understanding grow and our service bear lasting fruit.
We dedicate KDC, Banquet with the King, the Regina City Mass Choir, RCRC and 1,000 Voices to the glory of God. Let worship rise, let the gospel be heard, let lives be restored and let people come to Jesus.
Lord, manifest Your power in us, through us and among us. Yours is the kingdom, the power and the glory, forever. In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen!
